I'm looking forward to meeting Orthodox youth in Moscow. I hope some of you speak English because it will take me awhile to learn Russian. I am 19 years old. I like singing in choirs, especially Orthodox music and classical music. I hope perhaps I will be able to join a choir in Moscow. I will arrive in Moscow on Wednesday, September 23 and will be staying in a dormitory at the Moscow State University.

Please write to me directly to my email, since that will be easier for me: michaelbell1008@hotmail.com

See you soon.

Michael

No, I haven't been to Russia before. My father and my older brother have been to Russia, but I haven't. I will be in Moscow from September 23 to Decenber 18 and then I plan to return again in late January until the end of April. My plan is to study Russian and to meet Orthodox young people and to visit Orthodox holy places and places of historical and cultural interest.

Hello Michael! Were your parents or grandparents born in Russia?

No, we are not Russian. My father's family originally came from Scotland and then my great-great grandfather married a Cherokee Indian and they lived in Indian Territory in Oklahoma. My mother's family is mostly of Irish descent.

My brother and sister were born in Scotland, while my father was at university there and later was a minister in the Church of Scotland before he converted to Orthodoxy and then was ordained a priest. I was born in California and was baptized Orthodox.

Hello Iban. I do not arrive in Moscow until September 23.
Елена П
Hello, Michael!
It's nice to greet you here and it's wonderful that we're becoming more and more international: we know more and more Orthodox people (Americans and British) who want to visit Russia and comunicate with Orthodox youth here.
I have a question to you: I wonder what image you have about our country before you visit it. What is the image of Russia in general in America?
M-Bell
Hello Elena, I am also glad that we are able to communicate before I have arrived smile.gif

The image I have of Russia isnt very detailed since I have only seen photos of some of the famous places, but I know Russia is a very very large country and its culture is very different from other cultures that I have experienced in my travels. Also Russia has a very rich heritage and many holy places which I am looking forward to seeing. I mainly see Russia as a completely new experience, I expect it to be very different from other countries and places that I have been to, which makes it exciting for me.

As for the image of Russia in general to most Americans, that is a very difficult question. Unfortunately most Americans are ignorant about Russia, of course the Orthodox Americans know more, but obviously there is no way to generalize an answer for all Americans.
Елена П
Thank you, Michael, I see. Of course it´s difficult to say for all Americans.
And what about Orthodox literature in America - do you have oppurtunity to read, for ex, the heritage of St Fathers of Russian, Greek and other origin. Are they translated into English?
It's ineresting to know whether it is as easy to get various kinds of religeous literature in America? And how varios is it?
